Suggest Treatment For Recurrent Cough During Cold Weather

Why am I coughing ever since I had a cold in the beginning of December. When I am active the cough is really bad or if I go out in the cold. I was treated for aggressive prostate cancer with 8 1/2 weeks of radiation and I have had hormone shots to reduce testosterone production. Please advise me. I went to Dr. Last week he gave me Antibiotics and inhaler.

Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

From what you are describing it makes me think that you should do an X-ray and have a doctor to examine your lungs to make sure that you are not having an infection in the lungs, or another problem which needs follow up. About cough medicine you can use any over the counter medicine that will relieve the cough but not treat what has caused it. I usually suggest my patients Acetylcisteine, 3 times per day. Drinking plenty of fluids it is very important.
