Suggest Treatment For Recurrent Sores Despite Taking Acyclovir
One of my relatives routinely suffers from painful outbreaks of cold sores/fever blisters. Has been prescribed the usual medications (acyclovir, etc.) but sores keep coming back. Currently has several sores on upper and lower lips, also having eye pain and headache. I m concerned and think she should see her primary care physician.
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
As per your case history, your relative is having allergic dermatitis. My treatment advice is –
1. Avoid using any new products like soap or perfume. 2. Apply a soothing lotion like calamine lotion on affected region twice daily. 3. Take an antihistamine medication like levocetirizine twice daily for 7-10 days. 4. Other treatment options are oral antibiotics, oral steroid taken only after consulting a dermatologist.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Harshit Bhachech
