Suggest Treatment For Recurrent Vomiting And Loss Of Appetite

Hi, my five year old vomited yesterday evening but was fine after, however has eaten very little since as she has no appetite but went to school today and was in good form until 11.30pm tonight when she just woke up and vomited again? She was very hot when she woke up initially but has cooled down again since she got sick and has fallen back asleep now.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

When a child's stomach is upset, they usually vomit and have no or a poor appetite with or without a fever. If it is a mild illness, it usually lasts about 2-4 days. The first thing to do is to see that vomiting has stopped. I suggest you give her nothing by mouth for another 6-8 hours after her last episode of vomiting. If she hasn't vomited during that time, offer her 2-3 ounces of apple juice, pear juice, or Pedialyte. Again, if no vomiting for next 2 hours, offer another 2-3 ounces of same fluids. It is important to keep her hydrated, so you should monitor her fluid intake. Usually this is enough time to let her stomach settle down. At this point, offer either fluids or solids. If she desires food, then allow her to eat whatever she wants. Because of the history you provide, I suggest keeping her home until she has had no vomiting for at least 24 hours. The fluids that she drinks should be at room temperature because cold drinks can make the stomach cramp up. 2-3 ounces of the same fluids.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
