Hello. My mom is a 58 year old female. She has this recurrent pain in my abdomen with nausea x 9 years She has had her gull bladder removed. Ct scans. Ultra sounds all came back negative. She does have a history of social drinking and smoke 1 pack a cigarettes a day. It comes and goes about every 6/8 months. After she doesn t eat for about 3/4 days the pain goes away and she feels better. Can you tell me what else may be the cause of her pain or what other test may be performed?
Hi. Very good question and history about your Mother. She has pain in abdomen, with nausea; when she stops eating and gets OK. This happens once in 6 to 8 months ion recurrent basis.
The most probable cause of such a problems is sub-acute intestinal obstruction which gets instigated on certain foods or so, which are more fibrous. This is the reason that the pain is relieved after 4 days of eating nothing.
The most important test is Enteroclysis (Barium study) under fluoroscopy control to visualised the actual movement of the intestines, to see where the stricture if. This is preferable to be done when she is in pain.
This will give the diagnosis and a plan for further management.
