Suggest Treatment For Red Bumps Around The Tattoo

I have an 8 day old tattoo, and just a few days ago i began getting these red bumps all around it. Some of them are now white and itchy. I think its an allergic reaction to the A&D ointment i was using but i stopped using it the day i saw the first bump and the bumps have begun to spread outward on my skin. Not following veins or anything, just outwards in all directions. I started taking Benadryll 2 days ago and have noticed no significant decrease in size, but the itch is gone now. Does this sound like an allergic reaction?

Hello. Thanks for writing to us at healthcaremagic.

I will keep a possibility of Allergic Contact Dermatitis (ACD) to tattoo ink, as the reason for rashes/bumps and itching.

Specific treatment for ACD would include topical potent steroid+antibiotic combination creams (e.g clobetasol propionate+fusidic acid cream), to be applied twice daily for a week or 10 days. Topical steroids are prescription products.

Benadryl is very short acting, an OTC oral antihistamine e.g cetrizine 10 mg once daily, would be better option for symptomatic relief.

I would suggest that you visit a dermatologist in your region for the needful.

Your treating dermatologist might also start you on a short course of an oral steroids if deemed necessary, to take faster control of the allergic contact dermatitis.

Take care
regards
