People are legally able to make their own decisions generally BUT things outside of their control cvan be made contingent on their following through on drug treatment. This often involves paychecks, abillity to have a place to live, bank accounts, driving licenses. If one has control or can get control over these there is ability to have some control over the matter.
.
Here is why not to do that.
First, not getting treatment BUT not being on drugs is not a bad situation. People coming off of addiction and especially coming off of alchol are frequently with mood effects for a very long time. It is helped by caring and sometimes antidepressants.

Second, addiction is due to effects on thinking. Having someone's freedom taken away doesn't help. Addiction involves automatic reactions. These are increased by stress and emotion. Putting the reasons for that outside of oneself (I got put on the street by that person) will prevent people from taking their own responsibility.
