Hi; My 91-year-old mother often has difficulty swallowing when she is eating a meal. Not all the time, just a few times per week. She eventually gives up and regurgitates whatever she couldn t swallow along with some thick mucus. Any ideas how to avoid/correct this problem?
Your mother have reflux disease or hiatus hernia like condition.
Following are some solutions for it.
Take omeprazole for few days. Avoid excess spicy food. Avoid heavy fatty meal at night. Head raised while sleeping by putting pillow below head. After taking dinner don't immediately assume recumbency position. Avoid food that precipitate symptoms like coffee ,pastries , meat etc.
If still no benefit then consult doctor for fundoplication like surgery.
Take care
