Suggest Treatment For Ribs Pain While Breathing

I was coughing up some phlegm about 2 weeks ago and felt a cramping type of pain on my left upper quadrant area. It hurts when i breathe or lay down on that side. I feel it when I move around and cough. What could this be? It has not gone away yet, although the pain has subsided a bit.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

It may be a pleural inflammation called pleurisy or pneumonia or pleural effusion or intercostal muscle spasm or massive splenomegaly, etc. Until examination is done it is difficult to say what it is. Use tablet Ultracet twice a day for five days. Please consult your physician he will examine and do X-ray chest and treat you accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Penchila Prasad Kandikattu
