Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I was admitted to the hospital 4-1/2 months ago with sepsis a result of bacteria in the sac around my heart. I had heart ablation that burned a hole in my esophagus. I was on IV antibiotics for 6 weeks and since have taken clindamyacin 3/day. I am taking omeprazole 2/day and still have severe heartburn, reflux, and indigestion. In addition my hair seems to be falling out though I have not seen hair loss as a side effect. I am supposed to take the clindamyacin for another 2 months. Is that standard of care?
Hello, most likely you developed bacterial pericarditis, because of the complications of the ablation procedure. The antibiotics are standard of care and which antibiotic to be taken depends on the organism isolated from the fluid they must have aspirated from the sac. The duration and type if antibiotic depends on the , but generally it's atleast 6-8 weeks, sometimes more depending on recovery. When you are on so many antibiotic in high does, some hair fall and indigestion are known to occur. An pantoprazole /esomeprazole till you are on antibiotic is highly recommended. You may upload the reports for any further assistance. Regards Dr Priyank Mody
