Suggest Treatment For Severe Body Pain, Fever And Facial Swelling After Taking Nitrofurantoin
I am a 50 yr old healthy female. I was recently put on Nitrofurantoin for treatment of a UTI. I took one capsule a few nights ago and a second the next morning. Later that day I had severe body aches, a fever and my face (especially lips) were swollen. I obviously discontinued use of the antibiotic. We are now 48+ hours after taking that second dose. My fever and body aches are pretty much gone and swelling has gone down but now it hurts when I breathe in deeply, causing dry cough. most of all, my neck is really stiff. My stomach has been cramping the whole time too. I assumed this was an allergic reaction, but the stiff neck and trouble breathing in deeply are freaking me out. Should I be concerned? Or is this more likely just the flu

General & Family Physician, Dr. Priyanka's Response
Hi,
You may be experiencing an allergic reaction to nitrofurantoin, which can cause symptoms such as facial swelling, body aches, fever, and difficulty breathing. These symptoms can be serious and require immediate medical attention. It is recommended that you contact your healthcare provider or seek emergency medical treatment right away.
In the meantime, it is important to rest and stay hydrated. You may also find relief from over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen to alleviate body aches and fever. Avoid taking nitrofurantoin or any other antibiotics until you have been evaluated by a healthcare provider.
It is also important to report any suspected allergic reactions or side effects to your healthcare provider. This can help to ensure the safety of others who may be taking the same medication.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
