Suggest Treatment For Severe Constipation In A Child

My 7 yr old has CP. He was great on potty training but now has a problem with accidents. He will be very constipated but can t seem to control the muscle in order to get to the bathroom on time. He has several accidents now. His physical activity is great and he is highly functioning but this started to be a problem. How can I help him?

Pediatrician 's  Response
Temporarily, it will help to make him go to the potty every 6 hours in the day-time and wait for at least 5-10 minutes, making every effort to evacuate. If he does not agree or comply with this, you should start putting disposable underwear or nappies so as to prevent soiling and similar accidents.

The correct treatment will be to first relieve his constipation with laxatives and/or purgatives. Even enema is a better idea than doing nothing. Once the problem of stooling and soiling is solved, you should go ahead and take him for counselling and behavioural therapy.
