Suggest Treatment For Severe Headache And Vertigo

After going for a 2nd opinion about dizziness/light headed ness an Audiologist at the ENT found that the right side of my brain/inner ear (was very non specific) was 37% weaker then left. He thought that it was possible that previously I suffered a mini TIA. He stated he was diagnostician but a Nuerologist would work from a medication perspective. He said it was likely a beta blocker or a calcium blocker which would help. The Neurologist who had helped me through pretty severe Vertigo over the summer wanted to go with same treatment as we had successfully done this summer - skeleton, Valium, steroids and physical therapy ( and a lidocane shot in 3 places in my neck). Since then I m now experiencing severe headaches and im not really sure what the diagnoses means and I m feeling much worse. I want to better understand diagnosis as well as typical treatment.

Neurologist 's  Response
Hello,

I am afraid that the audiologist has indeed been a little vague. If his opinion was that of a possible TIA then it constitutes an emergency to be investigated in order to identify possible origins and get blood thinner medication to prevent an actual stroke from happening. So speaking of TIA and then referring to beta or calcium channel blockers is contradictory.

It's a little difficult to express a personal opinion with the information at hand, without knowing anything about physical exam, possible neurological signs, your age and accompanying illnesses. From the limited info, I am inclined to think of an inner ear origin and recommend anti-histamine medication like meclizine or dimenhydrinate. However, given the severe headaches, it would be recommended to be checked by a neurologist for other accompanying signs.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Olsi Taka,
Neurologist
