Hi , I am plagued by a severe itchy scalp that I scratch to bleeding sometimes. It is mainly on scalp, behind ears, and under my chin. Dry crusty red patches that come and go. My doctor prescribed clobetasol propionate, which helps sometimes. Is there anything further I can do
I can understand your concern for severe itching on scalp. After analyzing your query it appears that you have more of dandruff problem and the area is not cleaned properly. In all such cases it is quite important to maintain good hygiene of the scalp area and wash it regularly.
Applying clobetasol can cause dependence as well as thinning and other side effects on the scalp and therefore I better suggest you to not to self apply the cream. In my patients I generally use ketoconazole shampoo for daily or alternate day wash for few weeks and then shift to mild shampoos later on after some weeks.
For itching I prefer to give an antihistamine such as loratadine or cetrizine for two times a day. You can discuss further with a dermatologist. Take care.
