Suggest Treatment For Severe Menstrual Bleeding

Hi There,I had a polypectomy and D&C on December 13, 2016. I had been experiencing extreme menstrual bleeding from the polyp. My first period following the surgery began on December 22. It was so much lighter than I was experiencing and I was relieved. This week I have started my second period and I am having a return of flooding and extreme blood loss. Is this normal for the second period following this procedure? Thanks.

Hi there

Thank you for your question.

To answer your question, it is not normal to have heavy menstrual flow two months after the procedure.

Polyps and fibroids are some of the causes of heavy flow.
I suggest you visit your gynaecologist for an examination and ultrasound.

Other non gynaecological causes of bleeding to consider would be a bleeding disorder. I recommend a full blood count to review your platelet count. Your doctor might also order additional blood tests depending on the result of this test.

In the interim, you can decrease the blood loss by taking tranexamic acid, a prescription pill, your doctor will need to prescribe this.
Avoid using non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen and aspirin as this may worsen the bleeding.
Eat a diet rich in iron containing foods.

Get well soon.
Thank you
