Suggest Treatment For Severe Nose Bleed And Nasal Congestion

Hi Dr. I am 27 yo M. I flew 2 days back from Kathmandu, Nepal to JFK airport, New york. I am having this nose congestion and more importantly bloody discharges going on from both my nostrils. This is bothering me because it never happened before. I feel its worth mentioning that I felt terrible headache at my occipital area at the time of landing both at transit point and also at JFK. This was the first time I flew this long (5 hrs to the transit and 18 hours to the destination) and may be in the altitude that they flew. Thank you!

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Noted your history of blood stained discharge from both the nostrils and severe occipital headache. This happened post-flight of long hours.
These problems can occur due to the following reasons:
It looks that the problem must have started as simple rhinorrhea which one gets on change in atmosphere.
Long-flights are pressurized and can cause more problems.
The infection and increased congestion caused the oozing of blood stained nasal discharge and sinuses being a part of the respiratory system must have got blocked to cause you the occipital headache which is necessarily a referred pain.
Take Xylometazoline nasal drops and oral decongestants and you need to take an antibiotic and anti-inflammatory medicines too under the guidance of your Doctor.
If the results of treatment are less than expected, you can take an appointment of the ENT Surgeon and go for other tests of blood, CT scan of the sinuses for appropriate treatment.
