Orthopaedic Surgeon 's  Response
Hi, We need to know if he has swelling of the knee or the leg. Since it started in the soles of the feet he probably has inflammation of the fascia of the sole which is a thick ligament on the under surface of the foot. Also rule out foot deformities. Is he a diabetic then and his his serum uric acid increased if so these need to be addressed. This foot conditions can lead to pains along the calf and leg. Does he have altered sensation on the foot and does the back pain radiated down the leg if so will need a back xrays and may be an MRI.
