Suggest Treatment For Severe Painful Menstrual Cramps
Hi Dr. Rynne. I have a pretty big exam on Monday and I m worried that I might get menstrual cramps since I m expecting my period. I usually have pretty painful cramps. But I need to do well on the test. So I m considering taking tylenol if that happens, and just hope it won t make me sleepy. Do you have any suggestions/advice regarding this?
If during your menses, the pain that you get is not very sever type, you will get relief by Tylenol. Tylenol will not make you drowsy. Usually this pain is for first 14 hours of the menstruation.
If the pain is of colicky type and of some higher degree, you may add some anti-colic medicine to that. Hyoscine group of medicines are good anti-spasmodic medicines. Meftal-spas is a good medicine for this purpose. However, with these medicines you may experience dryness of the throat and tongue.
If the pain is of considerable severity, and start few days before the menses, you may have to take non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines (NSAID) with pain killers. Some of these medicines, though not all, may cause some drowsiness. So if you want to take NSAID, you should consult your Gynaecologist before you take them.
I hope this helps you.
