Hi,I am Dr. Gopal Goel (Orthopaedic Surgeon). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I fell whilst carrying a very hard plastic postal bin and it jammed into my upper ribs on the right side. This was 10 days ago. It still hurts quite a bit which I consider normal, but the thing that is concerning me is the popping noise I feel and hear when I breathe, especially if lying down and take somewhat deep breaths? Is this a fracture or a costochondral separation? Is there any difference between the two as far as treatment is concerned?
Dear patient You have significant amount of trauma to right rib cage and possibility of rib fracture cannot be ruled out. I would advise Xray of chest postero anterior view to rule out bony abnormalities. Ther is not much difference in treatment of rib fracture and costochondral fracture. If there is fracture it needs protection with chest belt for one month. Take tab diclofenac 50mg twice a day for pain relief. All the best.
