Hello,
Details about
vaginal discharge are it may be yellow or green also, chunky in consistency or may be fowl smelling, yeast or bacterial infection. Usually causes abnormal discharge, but thick, white discharge, which is milky white is described as clumsy, or clotted and is due to yeast. A thick white discharge can occur during your menstrual cycle and is known as
leukorrhea. It is completely normal. It slowly becomes thinner as time comes for ovulation or when an egg is released.
During ovulation, this discharge may become mucous like. Vaginal discharge keeps your vaginal tissue moist and lubricated and it is influenced by our reproductive hormones which are changing throughout our menstrual cycle, and in
pregnancy. This vaginal discharge also maintains our Vaginal PH balance. The fluid acts as a natural lubricant to move dirt and germs out of the vaginal cavity. So long as the discharge has no bad odor, it is normal and healthy.
If it causes irritation, pain, swelling or burning sensation during urination, and pain during intercourse then, you have to take treatment. Wash yourself with water only, don't use soap. Some important drugs are
Gynazole, Minister, Retailer, and
Fluconazole. Out of these, fluconazole is commonly used orally for 7 to 10 days, and sometimes a vaginal cream and tablets. You have to check for diabetes also, as
uncontrolled diabetes or a weak immune system requires a medical consultation.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Sunita Kothari, OB & GYN Specialist
