Suggest Treatment For Speechlessness Caused After A Stroke
My friend s 32 year old son has a stroke due to a heart defect. He is left-handed and it affected his right side. He cannot speak. What are the chances of him recovering speech? He is already a month into this, and cannot say a thing. But, he can sign his name, and understands what people are saying. What s a person s like this prognosis. And they say his cognition is intact.
Thank you for your query. I can understand your concerns. Your son has suffered from a stroke leading to rt sided hemiplegia with motor or Broca's aphasia. Cardiac defect might be Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO). In a left-handed person, speech area is present in the left hemisphere (70%) or right hemisphere (20%) or bilaterally (10%). Left-handers appear to have diffuse representation of language function ;hence their recovery from aphasia may be better than would be expected in RT- handers. Proper rehabilitation of the stroke patient includes early physical, occupational, and speech therapy.Gradual/partial recovery may take 06 months. Physical therapy can recruit unused neural pathways and have been shown to improve hemiparesis following stroke, even years following the stroke.
