I am scared for my mother. She is 77 with stage 4 lung cancer. The doctor instantly put her on 30mg of morphine twice a day. She was not at the point that she needed to be medicated in this way. Her dose was changed to 15mg twice a day and now she is off it. She is having severe withdraws. Is there anything to be done to ease the pain. Guess I will not be getting an answer because I have no money. Oh well. This is life
Hi, Thanks for writing to hcm. Cancer pain can be very severe and excruciating and usually it is well controlled by opioids like morphine. The proper way to use opioids is to use them round the clock, and not on as per need basis. You should again consult your doctor to restart morphine and try one of the sustained release combinations (like Morphine 30 mg SR tablets) which give pain better control throughout the day. To add to that you can take morphine 10 mg tablets for breakthrough pain if it occurs in between the doses. Hope this will be helpful. Regards, Dr. Aseem.
Hello dear. i have gone through your details. First of all for withdrawls, she can take some milder form of pain killers and lighter narcotic drugs but only after consulting a doctor. as far as her disease is concerned, at this age i would suggest some oral chemo or targeted drugs as these are easily tolerable rather than full chemotherapy. still our main aim will be to keep her pain free and active. Please discuss this with your doctor. Hope you understand now. regards
