Hello,
I can understand your concern. Stevens
Johnson Syndrome is a very rare reaction that can happen usually due to certain medication or due to infection present in the body.
Usual medications that can cause SJS are painkillers or antiinflammatory drugs,
gout medication,
seizure medication or drugs taken for mental illness. Certain infections such as
herpes,
pneumonia are more prone to cause this reaction. By avoiding the medications that trier the reaction and getting treatment for infections, if present, associated with the disorder, future episodes can be controlled.
In addition, people with certain gene are more at risk to develop the syndrome. People in India usually run higher risk to develop the syndrome. Little can be done if your son has genetic cause of the reaction.
Unfortunately, no specific treatment is yet available for this syndrome. Thus, only supportive therapy is given when the episode of syndrome comes.
As the reaction is rare, the hospitals you have approached must have managed the patient with diagnosis of more common disorders and as that failed, more uncommon reasons were considered. Thus, hospitals should not be blamed for their approach.
I hope this information helps you. Thank you for choosing HCM. I wish your son feels better soon.
Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
