Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have had two umbilical hernia surgeries and I was recently diagnosed with ovarian cancer and had a hysterectomy and intraperitanial chemo. Now I am having extreme pain in the lower right side of my belly. Had a cat scan and was diagnosed with a supraumbilical hernia. Could the chemo have impacted the walls and what would be the best course of action?
Hello As per the description of your clinical symptoms it seems that the supra umbilical hernia you are having is a delayed post operative complication of any of your previous surgeries. Para umbilical (supra umbilical) hernia is often noticed in patients who underwent some abdominal surgeries. Herniation of the gut occurs through any defect in the previous surgical wound, often due to intra abdominal straining in the post operative period.
The definitive management for any hernia is surgery. ( in your case it would be Hernioplasty with mesh repair ). I would suggest you to visit a surgeon without any delay ( Hernia often gets strangulated - an acute emergency condition). Get an USG ( whole abdomen ) done, and plan for your surgery with other preoperative management. In the meantime you may us an abdominal binder of a suitable size.
Thank you.
