Suggest Treatment For Swollen Knee After A Fall

Hi, my 88 year old grandmother fell a week ago walking outside. The brunt of the fall was in her knew which has since been swollen and extremely black and blue. It remains so now, even a week later and is very warm to the touch. SHould we be concerned? Does she need medical care?

Hi
Thank you for asking HCM
I have gone through your query.Your grand mothers problem is most likely a hemarthrosis (blood collection) of knee joint or hematoma which gives such characteristic color.Fracture or ligament injury should be ruled out.An orthopedic examination followed by X ray will be needed for this.If hemarthrosis or synovitis is there then it should be aspirated. You can apply ice pack, immobilize knee by elastic bandage and keep leg elevated.NSAIDs like ketorolac or ketoprofen will be helpful in relieving inflammation and pain.Hope this may help you.
Let me know if anything not clear.
Thanks
