Hi,I am Dr. Gopal Goel (Orthopaedic Surgeon). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am 70 year old female. Broke my femur in a fall two years ago. Everything healed well and had no residule pain for two years. For the last two months I have been having pain in my thigh. Seems to start in the lower right area and radiate up my leg. I had an X-ray recently by my surgeon and he said the rod and pins were in tact. It hurts whenever I am walking and especially when going down stairs. I am taking ibuprofen everyday to cope. What could it be?
If fracture united and implants are intact, the reason for pain after 2 years of surgery can be an infection. Early infection is difficult to diagnose. An X-ray of the right femur may show lysis around nail and screw may back out. Serum levels of C-reactive protein and ESR should be done.
If they are increased, there is a possibility of an infection. If the pain is around the knee joint, it may be due to osteoarthritis at this age.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Jayesh Vaza,
Orthopedic Surgeon
