Suggest Treatment For Thrush And Bad Taste In Mouth

I really hope you can help. My Dad has been poorly now for 16 months with thrush in mouth and gullet (not sure where else). He is now very ill and has lost alot of weight (he is 67). He has a nasty taste in his mouth and all food and drink taste horrible, so not able to each much. He has pain over his chest, arms and legs..very sensitive ...the wind hurts and bedsheets do too! He has been constipated for months. The doctor has prescribed 9 lots of anti-fungal medication, but no improvemtn. He has recently been diagonised with early/middle prostate cancer, but we are aware his poor health is not related to this. Please can you help???

Hello,

I can understand your concern. Fungal infections usually happen in patients who have been ill for long time for two reasons.

Firstly, your father must be on many antibiotics and other medications for various disorders he has been suffering from. These medicines change the normal bacterial flora of the mouth and that is why fungal growth is seen sometimes on the tongue and other areas of the oral cavity. Some medications are also responsible for the development of metallic or bad taste in mouth or loss of taste at all.

Secondly, the oral hygiene measures of your father must be compromised for he is in bed for long time and it is difficult to maintain the hygiene. This can also contribute to development of fungal infections in the oral cavity.

As he is already on the antifungal agents, he need not start any other medication. But you can discuss with the treating doctor if medicines contributing to the growth can be changed in molecule or dosage. Mouthwash can be started for use.

I hope this information helps you. Thank you for choosing HCM. I wish your dad feels well soon.

Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
