Suggest Treatment For Torn Ligaments On Knees

Hi. I was hit by a car ten days ago. After going to ER and having x rays, no bones were found to be broken but I was told my knee was sprained from the collision and may have torn ligaments. Was prescribed some pain killers. The car hit wasn t very strong so after a couple of days the bruises on my left leg almost disappeared and I could bend and flex my knees alright. For the last two days, however, I have been feeling some tingling and numbness down my left calf and in my left foot, extending from my knee. I wonder what the cause could be, if my bruise already healed, and whether painkillers are not the way to go anymore.

hello,
thank you for your reference.
from the history, it is apparent that you are not having any fracture of bone, which is a very good thing.
bruises are the collection of blood beneath the intact skin which get dissolved with in a couple of days.
but what sprains are? they are actually tearing of the fibres of the ligaments which stabilizes the joints.
now these fibers are collagen fibers and they are non contractile.
once fiber is torn, it takes a bit long time to regenerate to its previous state.
and more numbers of fiber are torn, longer the time is taken by them to get back to previous state.
body needs to keep it self well aware of the position of all of the joint, in order to maintain balance and all. and for this very reason, the soft tissue around a joint, particularly the capsule and the ligaments are provided with lot many sensory receptors.
during injury they get disturbed and so that they continuously keep paining, alarming the brain about the injury at the local level.
now if the injury is involving some nerve fibers too, then it will cause the sensory disturbances in its supplying area.
regarding paining ligaments, you have to bear with that until they are fully regenerated. we can have some pain killers like diclofenac and paracetamol in order to subside the pain and the inflammation.
you can also apply hot fomentation over the local area in order to hasten the regeneration process.
to get rid of the numbness and tingling, this pain killers themselves will help.
if after a couple of week, this condition still persists, they we can go will taking tab. mecobalamine, which is vitamin B12 which helps nerves regenerating faster.
what else you need to keep in mind? dont stress the local injured area much.
keep the leg in resting position so as not to bother with the healing procedure.
hope this will help you.
thanks.
regards.
