Hi,I am Dr. Gopal Goel (Orthopaedic Surgeon). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have been diagnosed with ulnar neuropathy and have been advised that I should get surgery. They want to cut into the muscle and secure the nerve to it to prevent it from moving across the bone. They advised that it would be painful and the recovery would be longer because of the muscle attachment. I also believe they want to put a cast on. My concern is I live alone and this is my dominant hand. I am concerned I won t be able to drive or do common household chores such as washing clothes, shopping, etc.
Dear patient Ulnar nerve is very important for hand function. As per your case you have got ulnar nerve compression at elbow into ulnar tunnel and your doctor advised release of compression. This is very rewarding procedure with excellent results and should be done at earliest possible time. Delay may lead to degeneration of ulnar nerve with permanent loss of hand function. Surgical procedure has no serious side effects in expert hands. You will be able to perform all functions after recovery. Rest may be required and cast may be also given if needed. So do not worry . Visit expert orthopaedic surgeon and get it done asap.
