Hello Doctor Grief,My father will be 93 in December. He lives alone in VA and I am his daughter, and live in Montana. For the last several months my father has experienced progressively worse urinary incontinence, probably due to prostate problems. He was treated with antibiotics twice, but the incontinence is getting worse. When he gets off the antibiotics the incontinence gets worse. He is unable to sleep at night due to the frequent incontinence and says that during the day it is just as bad. Do you have any suggestions on what to do? Would a transfer mal patch like Oxytocin help suppress the incontinence so he can get some sleep at night? Thanks for any insight on what to do.Is there a urologist available?I will get back to you tomorrow on this.
Hi, as you have correctly mentioned, the urinary incontinence is because of the prostate. And if it associated with stopping of the antibiotics, that shows one of the reasons may be urinary infections that needs to be checked. After evening, ask your father not to have increased fluid intake. He can start on oxybutynin 5mg three times a day and tamsolusin 0.4mg once in night just before going to bed. For initial days, condom urinary catheters may be used connected to a urosac for the nights. Hope this will help him.
