Suggest Treatment For Water Retention In The Legs And Ankles

My 75 year old mother is experiencing sudden onset of water retention in her legs and ankles. We have been to her primary and had blood drawn three times. At first her sodium levels were low.Now I worry she may have too much sodium. She also was prescribed Celebrex and it broke her out in a rash. I probably need to back up ~ she fell several months ago and the tear in her rota-tor cuffs in both shoulders didn t manifest until about two months ago when the pain caused her to go to her primary and then to a orthopedic. She had been very active before this injury. For some reason she has been having leg pain & that s when she was diagnosed with low sodium. She briefly took a supplement to replace sodium, potassium etc. I have reminded her to discontinue that. We are perplexed as to what could have caused the leg aching. Does low sodium cause leg pain and do some blood pressure meds cause low sodium?

Orthopaedic Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,Thanks for your query. After going through your query I came to know that your mother is having swollen ankles and leg. I think she should be investigated for liver , heart and kidney function test to know the cause .Till then she may be given ibuprofen for pain relief. You can discuss with your treating Doctor about it. I do hope that you have found something helpful. If you have additional questions or follow up queries then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your queries. Wishing you good health. Take care.
