I've been coughing non-stop for about 2-3 hours and have now developed a fairly large bruise, visible on the outside of my throat. I have been told that it's fairly common for blood vessels to break whilst coughing excessively. Is this normal? (It may be relevant to know that I have had a minor cough over the past 2 days).
Thanks for your question on Healthcare Magic. I can understand your concern. Possibility of viral upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) is more likely in your case. URTI can cause dry irritable cough which can be violent sometimes. So drink plenty of fluids orally and keep yourself hydrated. Avoid hard to chew food. Avoid oily and spicy food. Take antihistamine like levocetrizine or fexofenadine. Do warm water gargles 5-6 times a day. Don't worry, you will be alright with all these in 5-7 days.. If not improving then consult doctor.. Hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further. Wish you good health. Thanks.
