Psychiatrist 's  Response
Hi, Thanks for the query. May I know your exact symptoms apart from those mentioned above? How will you rate your mood, energy levels, interests in doing various things, sleep, appetite, self esteem (rate out of 10 with 10 being the best)assuming that you have been diagnosed with depression by a qualified Psychiatrist & you are taking ONLY antidepressants without significant improvement plus a strong history of bipolar disorder in family; I would suggest a few changes. 1. Consult doctor to stop antidepressant immediately as antidepressants can worsen cycling process of bipolar disorder 2. Get thyroid profile done 3. Consult your doctor for use of Quetiapine/Aripirazole/Amisulpride as all of these medications are good mood stabilizers plus antidepressants & relatively free of side effects. Lastly try to maintain a regular sleeping & waking schedule to avoid getting episodes of mania/depression.Hope this helps; good luck

Psychiatrist Dr. Shubham Mehta's  Response
Hello Lucy,
Bipolar Disorder has both the phases of depression and mania.
If you will keep taking your antidepressants even in the manic, hyperactive phase, your illness will become worse.
The best option is to start with a mood stabiliser like divalproex. this will prevent mood cycling in you.
Thanks.
