Hi.
Noted the history of a Teacher who used to teach for 12 hours a day for the past 15 years, developed problems with speech, stopped teaching from last month and the Doctor suggested surgery for a nodule on one cord, wants to know whether to get operated or any other treatment.
Yes, there aer two modes of treatment.
The first is medical one:
Voice rest means no talking or no strain on vocal cords to give it a rest so that minor polyp, edema can settle well.
Also to take good anti-inflammatory medicines.
Oral
steroids in tapering doses if there is no
diabetes or
hypertension.
Steam inhalation.
Multivitamins and anti-oxidants.
If this therapy fails to respond in 3 weeks then surgery may be considered. This is a precision surgery with great results in selected cases.
Cancer has to be ruled out histopathology.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, ENT & General Surgeon
