Hi,I am Dr. Gopal Goel (Orthopaedic Surgeon). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My daughter gave birth 9 days ago to a 10lb baby. She had a third degree tear and had to have surgery. She then had a blood transfusion 6 days later. while pregnant, she had carpel tunnel but it has gone. Her ankles are still swollen, she is a big girl and 37 years old. She has just said today that her tongue has gone numb and I was just wondering what would cause this? Thank you.
Hello, Your daughter's new born child's birth weight is just above average and delivered by caesarean. Pedal edema may be there for a few more days till she walks around and when she lies down - ask her to keep her foot elevated. Have her abdomen examined and kidney function can be assessed. The numbness of the tongue - even though nerve damage is blamed - it can be due to allergy, antibiotics, because of bad oral hygiene. Even pregnancy can produce numbness of the tongue. Wait patiently, maintain oral hygiene, a course of anti amoebic + multi vitamin tabs can be tried. If numbness persists and edema persist consult the Dr. Best wishes.
