Swollen Gums, Tooth Pain. Advised Hydro Floss Machine. Using Mouth Wash, Taking Flouride Treatment. Can I Take Tylenol?

Recently, my gums and teeth have been red, swollen and hurt. I went to a new dentist a few days ago and he said my x-rays looked fine and that I need to order a hyrdrofloss machine to flush water into the tooth area. He did not clean my teeth, which I wanted him to do as he does his own cleanings. I go back to him on Monday for an impression for a night guard as I have went a few years without one but I called him today and explained that my mouth continues to hurt...his response was...did you get the hydrofloss machine yet and I said no I had not ordered yet - he said he could not clean my teeth until I start on the machine but will take a look again on Monday when I come in for my impression. Should I find a different dentist with a hygenist or do I continue to go to this guy. Isn t there something immediately that he can give me or do that will help my pain. I am flossing, brushing and using the pro health mouthwash instead of Listerine because of the alcohol may burn worse. Also, he did prescribe a flouride treatment 5,000 unit toothpaste that I do at night...I am not sure what to ask him on Monday. Should I be taking tylenol and just gently brushing my gums - even my cheeks hurt. Thank you so much for all of your help in this matter.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi, as you describe there might be lot of infection, and he might be thinking that the hydrofloos machine may help you to controle the infection, as he advises, If it is very costly, or not available you can try other dentist.
I to my patient with such symptoms prescribe ofloxacin, ornidazole, and antiinflamatories. Thank you.

Dentist, Pedodontics Dr. Amitabha Chakraborty's  Response
Welcome to HCM forum. You should know first something about "Hydrofloss". Its an equipment which washes your teeth and gum with pressurized water force. Nothing else. Though the company claims that it changes or alters the tooth surface electrical charge balance, and prevents further bacterial attachment on tooth surface. There is not much scientific evidence to support their claim. These kind companies recruit some dentists to promote their equipment. and probably your doctor is doing that. As per your history you are not suffering from some serious gum disorder, and there is no change in the bone support of your gum. I would advice you to contact some other dentist, preferably a periodontist to treat your problems. You need some proper scaling and polishing,at the most some sub-gingival scaling. You can use simple warm salt water mouth wash instead of some commercial one. and there is no harm in using fluridated tooth paste. Contact some other dentist as soon as possible and get proper scientific dental treatment for your dental problem. Hope, you will get a good dental health soon.
