Swollen, Hot Middle Finger Knuckle. Treated For Tendonitis. No Relief. Suggest The Treatment?

I woke up thursday morning two weeks ago with a swollen, hot, middle finger knuckle (where it joins hand). It was fine when I went to bed Wed night. I have not been doing anything in a repetitive manner to cause this. I am a 59 yr old female in good health.
By Sunday it was so painful I went to emergency room. The Dr. said it was tendonitis and gave me anti inflammatory drug for 15 days. I finished them yesterday but have had no improvement with knuckle. It is still red, hot and swollen. Should I get another round of antiinflammatory meds?

Hello,
Thanks for the query to H.C.M. Forum.
In my opinion this type of red swelling , pain in middle finger may be due to .
1 Rheumatoid arthritis , diagnosis can be confirmed by rheumatoid factor examination. As you mentioned that there is pain in the middle finger with redness and swelling .
2 Gout , may be a gouty arthritis , diagnosis can be confirmed by examination of blood for uric acid level .
3 Osteoarthritis , diagnosis can be confirmed by C B C & e s r .
4 Other causes may be osteoporosis , so get blood for calcium level as in this age group this is a very common disease due to depletion of estrogen level.
In my opinion consult an orthopedic surgeon and get his opinion as physical examination is very important.
Good luck. Dr. HET
