Swollen Lower Leg Due To Injury, Painful. Keeping Leg Elevated, Applying Ice Pack. Natural Recovery?

I was riding my bicycle Saturday morning when someone darted in my way and in an attempt to avoid hitting them, lost a battle with the bike, lost control and ended up with minor scrapes on my knee, a huge gash on my lower shin (I believe the cut may be down to the white meat, so to speak) and the marks from the gears of the bike, cut into the back of my foot (below my calf, above my ankle). My knee is almost healed but the bruises on my lower leg is really bothering me however the swelling that developed from the accident has subsided. It's painful to walk or flex my foot. I keep my leg elevated with an ice pack on it often. Here is my main concern, whenever I put my foot down to walk, I feel a painful surge of blood flow. Sometimes, when I'm just standing, I feel sharp stints of pain in the affected areas. Should I go to the hospital, or is this the natural course of recovery?

Hi and thanks for the query,
Using ice parks and elevating the limb are recommended house measures. However, if you have been doing this for over a week now and the symptoms have not reduced that much, I would suggest you meet a primary care doctor for review. The situation could be more intense to require the use of anti inflammatory drugs. While waiting to see your doctor, continue with same measures and you could add a simple pain killer like Acetaminophen. Intense pain could be due to thrombophlebitis (vein inflammation). This however shall be checked by your primary care doctor. Kind regards
