ur father has TB + diabetes
its very common problem
and diabetes is the most common comorbidity with TB
need not to worry
u have to start anti=TB drugs with proper category and proper dosage
for diabetes part ur father must have insulin never oral hypoglycemic agent as long as TB treatment continues
ur father most probably 2+ in sputum
so his TB is grossly infectious
but it is not need to isolate him
because it is no longer a social stigma
keep ur father in a well ventilated room
clean ur father's dress and beddings everyday
tell him to put his sputum in a separate container
if possible ur father should use a mak
avoid same bed sharings atleast in the 1st 2 months of the treatment
i think u got my point
thank u

General & Family Physician Dr. Aparna Kohli's  Response

Hi Roy,
Thanks for writing in.
Tuberculosis is definitely a curable condition. Diabetes can also be controlled well with a mixture of drugs and proper dietary modification. I would suggest the following for your father:
a. Have a high protein diet. He can take pulses, soya, egg and non vegetarian items ( only grilled or steamed or baked).
b. Have plenty of salads and fruits
c. Avoid sugar, oil and sweets
d. Avoid junk food altogether
e. If his sputum is positive for acid fast bacilli ( TB bacilli), then he should wear a mask and all the family members should avoid staying in the same room for 1 month. If that is not the case, he should use a handkerchief to cover his mouth while coughing.
f. For the management of his diabetes, I would suggest that you consult a physician in person so that drugs can be started according to his blood sugar levels..
Regards
