Taken Wrong Dosage Of Methotrexate. Worried About Overdose
Hi I was prescribed methotrexate 2.5mg to take 6 once a week for treating a skin condition. I accidentaly read the description of dosage incorrectly and thought it said take 6 -2.5mg a DAY! I've discovered this about 5 days into taking the medication. This past Monday I took two 2.5mg tablets, Tuesday I took 6 2.5mg tablets, Wed I took 4 2.5mg tablets , Thurs I took 4-2.5 mg tablets, Fri I took 4 2.5mg and today (Sat) only took 2 2.5mg .. Then I discovered my error. I've been worried to death and have been reading online if this is an overdose and what I should do.. Oh with each of these days I did take 1mg of folic acid each day as prescribed my my doctor.. I took 3 more mg of folic acid today when realized my error.. Please help
Hello, Thanks for the query to H.C.M. Forum. Even 30 mg/ day of methotrexate can be give in few selected cases in various diseases. You have taken an optimum dose of 6 tablets (2.5 mg) in a day means 15 mg.
No doubt this is an immunosuppresant drug but not as harmful as you are thinking. I am sure you will get any harm with this drug.
However side effects of methotrexate are , nausea, vomiting, anaphylaxis, hepatic necrosis, renal toxicity, oral inflammation, rashes. These side effects occurs ,if it uses for prolong time. As these type of side effects , you have not mentioned in your query , so presumed that these didn't occurs. Hope you will come out from this dilemma. If further any question I will help. Good luck. Dr. HET
