Taking Epilim. Weight Gain, Stomach Pain, Difficulty In Thinking And Concentration. Side Effects?

I have recently in the past 3 months been put on Epilim . I have also recently (in the past 3 months or so) put on a stone , maybe more but all surprisingly in my abdomen so much so that it hurts. I also find it hard to stay awake, have found my balance has become affected and my ability to concentrate and think has subsided! Is the epilim the cause?

Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

Epilim (sodium valproate) is well known to cause weight gain. However, it is mostly due to increased appetite, resulting in overeating. So, if you eat in moderation and exercise well, this extra weight can be shed.

Imbalance and poor concentration may rarely be also due to epilim, but are not common with it.

Please discuss these issues with your neurologist in the next visit. If necessary, he would replace epilim with another anti-epileptic drug.
