Taking Lyrica For Severe Back Pain. Suffering From Degenerative Disk Disease, Knees Swollen. Will Lyrica Help?

Hi. I've been given Lyrica 75mg for severe back pain, which I have had for many years. I suffer from degenerative disk disease, my spine is curved to the right and I have had (or maybe still have) a herniated disc at T8/9 level. Will Lyrica 75mg help relieve some of this pain? It is getting so bad that my knees are becoming sore/swollen and I can't seem to function properly

Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Basically,Lyrica (pregabalin)is prescribed for symptomatic relief from NEUROPATHIC pain (pain originating from neural structures). If your back pain is arising due to arthritic changes in the facet joints or due to muscular spasm of the paravertebral muscles, pregabalin will not work in these conditions. So, you have to use a conventional analgesic and muscle relaxant for the pain.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day

General & Family Physician Dr. Prateek's  Response
Lyrica is a supportive and symptomatic treatment for pain due to neurogical causes however it will not improve the degeneration of disc, knee swelling may be due to increased pressure on joints due to misallignment of spine or it may also be due to other causes which needs evaluation by orthopedic doctor.

You can continue this medicine as this is likely to benifit you for pain which you are having

HOPE this information helps
