Taking Venlafaxine For Fibro And Levothyroxine. Does The Medications Increase The Appetite Of A Person?

I have fibro & have been taking Venlafaxine (only 37.5 mg) for about 3 years. I like the fact that it helps my pain and also the mild depression that can come w/fibro, but I don't like the fact that I can't even cry when a friend dies, etc. I also think it's raising my BP, for which I also take meds. I'm also Type 2 & have just (since May 2013) been taking Levothyroxine. I feel like a big drug addict & I seem to want to eat all the time! I know I'm not hungry, but I still want to eat - mostly junk, of course. Any suggestions.

Internal Medicine Specialist 's  Response
Hi there,

Thanks for your query.

Venlafaxime is an anti-depressant. It increases appetite by driving away depression, which leads to a normal mood and hence a better appetite.

Levothyroxine increases the metabolic rate, burns more calories and hence appetite is increased to encourage the person to eat more and make up for the shortfall.
