My 13 year old son has had intermittent pain in his penis for about a month now. It is level 10 pain some days and then completely gone other days. He is also fatigued earlier (bed around 8 instead of 10 like before), and harder time getting up in the morning. He had pain in his penis as well when he was about 8, that was bad enough for me to take him to our Children s Hospital, where he had an ultrasound of his bladder and nothing unusual was found. He was referred to a pediatric urologist , but we received a letter stating that the waiting list was too long and to get a new referral in a year if he still had pain. Over the next five years, he only had mild pain when urinating occasionally, like when we travelled and he was dehydrated. Drinking water and taking a shower always helped. Now this latest episode, at 13. He can t take it anymore. I took him to our emergency dept again, and he received another ultrasound, where they found nothing unusual with his bladder, kidneys, or ureters. He is getting depressed and feeling hopeless. He is scared of a pain episode hitting him again - he said it feels like the inside of his penis is being ripped apart. Usually it was just before, during, and for about a half hour after urination. This past week one day he had pain for 2 hours when he didn t need to urinate at all - that was a new symptom. He is so scared - he has some Uristat which did work sometimes but not this last time. What could it be? What could I direct his doctor to look for? He is on a waiting list for a urologist but I m not confident that he ll see one in the next 6 months or year (we re in Canada).
