Thank you for your query. Encorate chrono is a common drug given for your condition. It contains
Sodium valproate and
Valproic acid.
It is a comparatively newer and relatively safer anti epileptic (compared to older ones like Eptoin, Gardenal etc.)
Common side effects are sedation, gastritis, alopecia (falling of hair), mild
hepatic dysfunction, confusion, weight gain,
Polycystic Ovarian Disease (only in females).
Some rare, but severe side effects include hepatitis, pancreatitis, bone marrow suppression, rashes, vasculitis.
However, you need not to worry as your dose is quite low. My patients whom I prescribe Encorate chrono, I ask for a liver function test done at baseline (i.e. before starting medication), at three months, and yearly thereafter. I also ask my patients to monitor body weight every 3 months. I also prescribe Folic acid along with valproate, particularly in my female patients. And I warn them about the signs of toxicity or overdose, which includes
blurred vision, difficulty in speech (dysarthria), tremors, gait abnormality, confusion etc. And I ask them to contact me immediately in case any of these appears.
you should be in touch with your doctor regularly during treatment at an interval convenient to you both.
hope I've been able to satisfy your query. best of luck.
