Teething Canines. Why Constipation? What Can Help The Child?

My son is 1yr 9months old, he is teething (canines and pre-molars) and is having ill health since last 2 months continuously. he has taken 3 consecutive courses of antibiotics , metoxim- 5 days then again 20 days and then augmentin syrup for 5 days in this 2 months period for throat congestions. He has fever frequently and an upset stomach in between and now is suffering from constipation . He has been prescribed lumerax 20 DT for 3 days, HYDKOF 3.5 ml X 3 times a day for 5 days and duphalac 8ml X 3 times a day for 2 months. He has a history of Febrile convulsion and was admitted in March 2012. His health was excellent till he was 1 year old, then he started catching infections more frequently and in the last 2 months his health is not all right even for a single day. Can this be due to teething? pls. suggest. Otherwise he is very active and a brilliant child and also goes to school and is in playgroup.

hello and welcome to HCM forum,
i am glad you wrote in, according to the dental history provided here, i would like to inform you that during teething a child tends to get slight fever and in some cases diarrhea, but teething cannot be linked to a long term illness.
Prolonged antibiotic course has side effects like stomach upset is one of them, do not overdose your child with antibiotics until prescribed by your doctor.
as your child is 1 year and 9 months old, his deciduous or milk teeth(canines /molars) might be erupting, premolars are not present in children.
but do not worry just make your son eat healthy food, drink lots of water and he will be fine.
i hope i answered your query,
i wish you and your son good health,
take care.

As per the history of the patient, teething could be directly associated with the presenting symptoms of the child. Teething of canine is a painfull event as it has the longest root and wide dimensions so there is more bone resorption of the surrounding area which is associtaed with severe inflammation. Thus the child experiences pain and has a habbit of bitting down the things as it relives the pain . As their digestive system is not very strong, thus diarrhea and constipation is seen as they have a habbit of putting anything in their mouth. Infant gums often feel better when gentle pressure is placed on the gums, gently rubbing the gums with a clean finger or having the child bite down on a clean washcloth. If the pain seems to be causing feeding problems, sometimes a different shaped nipple or use of a cup may reduce discomfort and improve feeding. Cold objects many help reduce inflammation as well. Twice-a-day cleaning of the gums using the washrag used for cleaning the face and hands after eating is effective and simple. Even after this there is no improvemnt in health , then consult a nearby physician to rule out any other cause.

Dear friend.

Thanks for sharing your concern.

Actually teething in itself does not cause any problems. The child tends to bite everything he gets in his hand.

Also, during teething it is seen that the child tends to bite each and every thing.

Most of the times the child has tendency to put many infected materials in his mouth like soiled toys and fingers too.

This causes recurrent gastro intestinal infections. Thus causing diarrhoea and vomiting.

Therefore, i would say please maintain very good hygiene for the child andalso in their surroundings to minimize these infections.

Rest its better to keep in touch with your pediatrician and give zinc containing syrups at this stage.

Hope it helps.

Thanks.

Take care.

Hi,

Thanks for asking the query,

Teething is usually associated with abdominal discomfort, diarrhoe, fever.
During this period child has a tendency to put each and every thing in his mouth so the chances of infection increases.

I would suggest you to take your child to a Child Specialist and get a checkup done.
Maintain a good oral hygiene of your child, clean his mouth with a guage piece or clean handkerchief after every meal.
Give your child a complete balanced diet.

Hope this helps out.

Regards..

teething do cause irritation of gums and child tries
to chew anything he finds in his hand.that body may carry
infections leading to affect child health otherwise teething
does not cause any such effect.i would advice you to
get teething appratus properly sterilised for your child.
avoid water or jelly containig toys as these can catch
infection quickly.rinse mouth with warm saline water thricw
daily.
take care

hello,
your son is going through the period called "window of infectivity" .in these period microorganism like bacteria concentration increases in oral cavity.also the child at this age tends to put each and everything inside his/her mouth which increases the risk of bacterial infection.teething also increases the risk of bacterial infections like diarrhoea.these are the reasons why your child is sick.therefore the only treatment is symptomatic and here the tagline "prevention is better than cure" holds true.kindly avoid any further medication.
hope i could answer your query.
