Thumb Swollen, Bruised, Movement Limited After Jammed Between Shoulder And Chest. Sprain? Possible Treatment?

Hi,

I was playing football yesterday and somebody ran into my hand. They jammed my thumb between their shoulder and my chest.

Now the base of my thumb is swollen and bruised and I have limited movement. There isn't any pain when not being moved.

Any idea whether this is just a sprain or could it be more serious? Also, could you please provide me with some rehab ideas if possible?

Thanks!

Hi!
Welcome to HCM!
It is possible that you only sustained a significant contusion/sprain to your thumb from the impactl, but It may not only be a bruise, it could have a ligament injury that needs treatment. An ulnar or radial collateral ligament injury can be partial requiring immobilization or it may be completely torn often requiring surgery. injury to/at the base of the thumb must rule out scaphoid bone fracture.
An exam by a orthopedic surgeon, sometimes leads to an MRI, sometimes to splinting or casting and at times surgery. Faliure to care for these injuries can lead to long term issues with the thumb .
hope this helps.
Take care!
