Thyroid Ultrasound Found Nodules, Abnormal TSH, T3 And T4 Level, Has Cold. Will Balance Diet Solve The Issue?

Just got thyroid ultrasound found 4 nodules 2 each side 3 mm ea , tsh is 3.2 t 3 and t 4 normal
thinking biopsy is best way to determine whether benign or malignant , then if benign.. maybe test to determine if nodules are HOT ie thyroid producing or COLD not hormone producing..
was thinking if benign biopsy, and not hot hormone producing nodules ,, I wont need any further treatment..

my endocrine doc is very pro medication and wants to put me on Thyroid med, but I think its better to do biopsy and scan to determine nature of nodules, especially since there is no evidence showing thyroid medication shrinks or helps w nodules and can exacerbate a delicate balance gland.. seems to me if nodules were causing thyroid hormone to be higher, my T 3-4 would be elevated which is isn't

what is your opinion????

Hi,
Thanks for writing in.

It is important to know your symptoms which led you to getting thyroid function tests and ultrasound. Nodules in size ranging for 3 mm are not something you should get scared about. At the same time medication does need to be given for raised TSH levels.

It is not that the nodules always cause the balance to be altered, it can happen due to dysfunction of the hypothalamus - pituitary axis as well. This is located in the brain and needs treatment to control the increased TSH levels. The treatment may be achieved by medication only.

Getting a nuclear scan and FNAC/ biopsy are not very important if the size of nodule are in the range 3 mm. However you could do a nulcear scan and discuss the feasibility of FNAC/ biopsy with the pathologist because a 3 mm lesion is really small for the investigation.

Hope this helps
