UTI, Bladder Infection, Diarrhea, Cramps, Bloated. Urine Is Not Cloudy. Meaning?

Hi, I think I may have a UTI or bladder infection as I can't empty my bladder properly. It started Monday after my dentist's appointment and at the same time I started to have cramps and gas and felt bloated. Later on, I had diarrhea along with the bladder problem . The diarrhea and nausea calmed down and my bladder seems to be a little better now but it still doesn't empty all the way and feels full all the time. My urine is not cloudy, no foul odour. I wonder if the bowel movements (not the diarrhea) could have caused the bladder problem?... I had the bladder problem for a few months now (seems to not empty completely) but it got definitely a lot worse Monday. Thank you

Hello and welcome to HCM.

Thank you for your query.

The most vital information you need to provide is your age and sex, as this is an online consultation, such basic information can go a long way in aiding the doctor with the suspected diagnosis and accordingly its likelihood.

Let me try to provide you with some information, making a few assumptions. If you are male and are nearing 50 years of age, or above, then this problem could be due to an enlarged prostate, which can be confirmed by a DRE (digital rectal examination) by a doctor, or an ultrasound of the pelvis. The enlargement of the prostate is age-related, and can be controlled. This can lead to recurrent urinary infections.

If you are a female and have experienced an incomplete emptying of the bladder the causes could be numerous (Eg. uterine fibroids, uterine fistulas, tumors/cancer, etc.). The bowel condition that you suffered from could also have caused this, due to irritation of the bowel and thus its enlargement, the bowel can put pressure on the bladder causing such a presentation. But, the pressure on the bladder and the urinary symptoms should have subsided along with the normalization of the bowel.

Either way, if your presentation continues, you will have to visit a doctor, to go about a physical examination and a laboratory examination of your urine, which will help us find the cause. If required, the doctor might also ask for an ultrasound examination, which will help to better visualize the shape, size and contour of your bladder, and its surrounding structures.

I hope I have succeeded in providing the information you were looking for. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications. I would gladly help you.

Best wishes.
