Urine Culture Showed Positive For Morganella. Is It Infectious?
My Aunt had a urine culture that tested positive for Morganella. She has been advised to go the the ER, but is resisting being admitted after a bad experience at a different hospital 2 months ago. How serious is this infection? And, should she be seen by an infectious disease specialist in the ER? Where she lives, the ER has hospitalists who generally practice or are certified in either family medicine or emergency medicine .
hi, Your aunt is having urinary infection caused by bacteria called morgonella. Usually it is an oppurtunistic infection which means it infects people with decreased immunity, hospitalised patients, patients with long term catheters. You have not mentioned if your aunt was admitted in a hospital 2 month back. Also it can occur in patients who are taking antibiotics for different reason. She needs to consult a specialist and should be treated with appropriate antibiotics. It is treatable, if left untreated infection may spread to other organs.
