Urine Like Smell In Lobster Meal. Is It Because It Was Spoilt? What Is The Outcome?
Hello, We just purchased lobster from the supermarket, to me it smelled like urine, but the it was my first time eating lobster. My girlfriend says it was fine... but now I have been researching online and people say if it smells like ammonia then it is spoiled... could that be the urine like smell i was smelling? If it was spoiled, will i be ok if i cause myself to thor throw it up or will i still get sick... or was it a normal smell?
Urine like or ammoniacal odor in a cooked lobster indicates that the lobster was dead for sometime prior to cooking and the quality of the meat has deteriorated. However, it does not mean necessarily mean eating it will cause food poisoning. For sure it already had bacterial growth prior to cooking but most of them most likely were destroyed during the cooking process.
Possibly, there can be toxins left on the meat, but the extent of its possible harmful effects would be largely dependent on the amount of such toxins and type of toxins present. The poisoning generally presents within 5-6 hours or it may also present late i.e. 10-13 hours.
If you have any of toxic complains do consult to a nearby General Physician !!
Hope this information helped you. Let me know if you need any more clarifications.
